What is Windows XP?

  • Windows XP is Microsoft's name for the next generation of Windows Operating Systems and will replace both Windows 2000 and Windows Me. Windows XP is important as it moves the home consumer PCs to an Operating System built on the Windows 2000 codebase and as a result offers consumers the reliability and security of Windows 2000 combined with many of the consumer oriented features in Windows Me and new features to make the PC experience both reliable and rewarding.

    What are the different flavors of Windows XP?

  • Windows XP will have flavors for both Server and Client use. For client machines Windows XP comes in two flavors, Professional and Personal. Professional is for use in businesses and will supercede the current Windows 2000 Professional product, this version of the Operating system will offer some higher end functionality that is suitable for corporations and businesses where the PC is an essential tool. Personal is for home use and supercedes Windows Me as the Operating System of choice for the home, this version of the Operating System has great features to make the PC an essential part of home life for example multiple users and fast user switching and support for digital media.

    Where can I get Windows XP?

  • To receive the beta of Windows XP you must have Universal or Professional Membership of MSDN—http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/

    When will Windows XP ship?

  • It is too soon to identify a specific release date for Windows XP, but the target timeframe is the second half of 2001.

    Where can I get more information about Windows XP?

  • More information on Windows XP will become available over the coming months and there will be a gradual roll-out of this at DevX.Com at http://windowsxp.devx.com/ and on MSDN.

    How will Windows XP improve the user experience?

  • Building on the momentum of the Internet and digital media, Windows XP will include several improvements that increase productivity and provide both business and home users with an easy to use and exciting PC Experience. Windows XP will also bring the solid foundation of Windows 2000 to home PC users—enhancing reliability, security and performance

  • .NET is a broad set of technologies to deliver a new experience based on connected computing. Windows XP is the next step towards delivering the .NET technologies, over the coming months we will discuss the .NET experience in Windows XP and how it sets the stage for future releases that incorporate even more .NET technologies.
